Name? Matthew Shears

Profession? Furniture maker

Uphill or Downhill? Used to be uphill, now steadily downhill.

Most epic day on a bike? 190Km on a fixie road bike that I’d finished building the day before and never ridden. Also it had a new Brooks saddle – ouchie! That was a long time ago and I wouldn’t be so silly today. Recent epic was most of the Queen Charlotte walking track in New Zealand in one day with Dave, Col and a big hangover. Wait, what was that about silly…?

I’m currently riding? anything I find in my shed with 26 inch wheels.

nn

Favourite trails (other than Castlemaine) – I’m not well traveled, but Stonefly and Dellatite at Buller are a blast. Also W2K Trail along the shore of Lake Taupo, NZ is pretty special.

If I wasn’t mountain biking I’d be… Sad and lonely and fat. Thank God I found mountain biking again, now I’m just sad!

nn

One day I’ll ride… A Giant. Ha ha ha, just kidding… Moab or Scotland, they’re so similar I can’t decide.

nn

nn

When I head out for a ride I never leave without... My beard.

nn

My race highlight? Last round of the Mountain Bike Club winter series in 1991/2, Forest of Dean. Here I am on the climb to the finish to take second place in the novice cat for the series. I cross the line, keel over sideways and puke last nights pasta all down my front. Happy days!
